It’s Women’s History Month, Let’s Celebrate!

Anyone who knows me well, knows I’m not a big fan of winter. One thing I do appreciate about this is the time of year, however, is the opportunity to celebrate our history. There’s no doubt that the contributions of women to the history of this country — and nearly every other one on the planet — are woefully under-documented. Which is why, throughout March, BPM is celebrating women leaders in media and nonprofit organizations. You can follow this virtual celebration of history making sisters on our social media channels.

I also invite you to join us on Thurs., March 10, for a special virtual screening of Monica Land’s powerful new documentary, Fannie Lou Hamer’s America. If you, or someone you know is looking for an uplifting story about a sister who put it all on the line to push this nation forward, this is one film you shouldn’t miss. Can’t make the screening? Then stream it from WORLD Channel. It should be required viewing for every American.

Those of you who’ve registered for this month’s Black Media Story Summit, which is focused on vaccine equity in Baltimore, will have the pleasure of hearing from our trailblazing guest keynote speaker, Dr. Zoanne Clack, executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy. We’re just about out of slots for this virtual event, so if you haven’t already registered, hurry. Slots are nearly gone. If you miss it, stay tuned for the next one, which will be held this fall in another part of the country.

Details about these and other opportunities to celebrate women’s history appear in this month’s newsletter. I’d like to close this post by giving a shout out to the hard-working Black Public Media staff. Throughout my career, I’ve had the good fortune to work with incredible women — including BPM’s founding executive director, Mable Haddock and her successor/my predecessor, Jacquie Jones. They and many other women who’ve served this organization over the years — whether as board members, staff members, workshop leaders, institutional partners, or volunteers — all have understood the power of stories to change the world and the imperative of getting more of our stories in circulation.

It is my honor to be able to continue that tradition. But I couldn’t do it without the dynamic team of brilliant and dedicated women currently on the BPM staff. They are definitely the wind beneath my wings and I am deeply thankful for all that they do.
