Black August: Remembering Black Freedom Fighters
by Leslie Fields-Cruz
Black August is a time for us to commemorate Black freedom fighters, political prisoners, and resistance against oppression and inequality.
So go ahead, sit down this month and watch Orlando Bagwell’s Malcolm X: Make It Plain or Joy Davenport and Monica Land’s Fannie Lou Hamer’s America. You might also watch Sam Pollard and Ben Shapiro’s Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes and Sandra Rattley’s Searching for Augusta Savage as a reminder of the long legacy of artists who’ve used their platforms to fight for justice, freedom and equity.
These powerful stories and many others highlight the resilience and courage of our community, and it’s through the support and funding of Black Public Media that such impactful narratives can be brought to life.
Thanks in advance for your ongoing support.
